Just got back from the seeing the movie Syriana and I do have to say I quite enjoyed it.

The reason behind this is not because of it taking a long hard look at our current energy troubles, and machinations, but because it stuck to the concept of how real life works: complexity.

There are children. There are adults. Adults make choices based on what they consider important. Children make choices based what they want. The difference lay in what is considered important, and what is considered desirable. The movie makes a very good point in that people make choices based off desire, and exchange them with importance. Importance sometimes is need, or perhaps the lives of millions of people. Desire, has nothing more to it than that. It's just desire.

Now, what was humanizing about the whole affair is that you get reasons for why each person did what they did. The rich oil barons were poor fools who literally destroyed every shred of honesty they had in exchange for power. The minority "token black" guy grew up with a drunk for a father, and became the devil's hand. The well paid businessman had a grand vision, and sacrificed his heart for it. The CIA Agent wanted to be part of the action again, put it all on the line to do so. The middle eastern kid wanted to belong to something more enriching than his life, and thus cashed out. The prince wanted a better tomorrow for his people, and was put down because of it.

Each one made their beds, and slept in it. In the end, the country with the most power ended up on top. This is how the world works, in very cold, dark terms. It is very true as well. No one really had any friends, enemies, nor neutral partners. Everyone had their own choices to make, and they ended up all doing horrible things. Why? Why did they all end up doing horrible things? Is it a sign of something? I looked upon the roles of each character. All of them would be considered the creme de le creme of society, and yet on the inside they all had so many disgusting things to hide. The more I think about it, the more I don't want to be a part of any society almost. Each one had a thought, and let it consume them. Zero balance. All or nothing. I guess that's why it scared me a lot. To be consumed with purpose is to be less than human, and yet the revered ones are just that. Consumed.

So, what I can take from the movie is this: No matter what your station, or position in life do not underestimate your ability to fuck up the whole entire course of mankind. One hard working, abused, brave, blind, selfish, confused, or good person could be the significant deciding factor. And yeah, as the movies says, it really is "all connected."
